How to Resolve MFT Corruption Error and Recover Valuable Data

NTFS (New Technology File System) file system is made up of various metadata, in which one of the most significant metadata is MFT (Master File Table). MFT basically contains all the information about each and every file and folder stored on NTFS partition. Thus, MFT contains at least one record for each file stored on the logical volume that has NTFS file system. These records contain the attributes which guide the operating system to how to work with the file or the folder associated with that record. Hence, any corruption to MFT may cause inaccessibility of NTFS partition/volume and data stored on that. In such critical situation, you need to opt for partition recovery software to work around the situation.

Consider a practical case in which when you try to open, rename, or delete a file or folder saved on NTFS partition, you receive the following error message:

“<drive>:\<folder> is not accessible
The file or directory is corrupt and non-readable.The file or directory is corrupt and non-readable. The file or directory \<folder> is corrupt and unreadable.
Please Run the Chkdsk utility.”

Thus, this error message pops up every time when you try to perform any of the above mentioned tasks with your file or folder.

Cause:

When the MFT of your NTFS volume gets damage then this message appears. Thus, the main cause behind this error is corruption or damage in MFT.

Resolution:

To rectify the issue you need to run CHKDSK utility on your computer.

Warning: When the CHKDSK utility of Windows detects the issue and attempts to repair the damage then there are chances of data loss. Thus, it is recommended to take the full backup of your hard disk before running CHKDSK/F command.

To rectify and repair the issue through chkdsk follow the below mentioned steps:
  • Go to ‘Start’ and then  click ‘Run’
  • In the Open box, type chkdsk /f <drive>, where <drive> is the drive letter of the volume on which the damaged folder or index of the file system exists.
  • Click OK.

Note: If the drive is large then chkdsk can take several minutes to several hours to complete the process.

However, if chkdsk fails to solve your problem then to recover your valuable data, you need to use third-party partition recovery software. One of the efficient partition recovery software is Stellar Phoenix Partition Recovery Software. The software has simple GUI and easy recovery steps to recover data which is lost due to corruption, damage, or formatting of partition. The comprehensive software supports data recovery from both NTFS and FAT file systems.
