Windows Phone 7 to Launch on Oct 11th

In a way it’s a pity that the date 10/10/10 falls on a Sunday, but after much speculation Microsoft have officially announced a joint launch event with mobile operator T-Mobile to launch their new Windows Phone 7 smart phone operating system.

The date of the 11th has been rumoured for a while though some commentators, such as technology blogger Paul Thurrott, have said that this wouldn’t be the date as Microsoft always held a general press event this time every year.

Another date that was rumoured was October 25th though this has now proven to be inaccurate.

It will include a five minute keynote followed by a twenty minute presentation on the new OS itself. This short event would then be handed over to T-Mobile staff for an hour of presentations and demonstrations on a one to one or small group basis.

The event, in a nice touch, is set to end up with a raffle with any cash raised, we hope, going to charity. The launch event website was open for all to see yesterday but has since been closed at say that it is by invitation only. This could be because it was an error on the part of the Microsoft marketing people, however it is entirely possible that the event was fully subscribed very quickly yesterday.

Windows Phone 7 has gained a huge amount of publicity and speculation in technology circles and it will be interesting to see how the mainstream press covers the new OS when it launches. Neither Apple nor Google have hinted that they’re going to put anything up against it in the same week, which can sometimes happen, but Google are also yet to launch their Chrome OS and a launch event could come around the same time and stamp quite firmly on Microsoft’s glory
